Virtually every religion in the world has a way of describing a state of oneness with the divine, the achievement of which inspires this kind of trust. Buddhists call this enlightenment; Christians call it conversion. Most religions prescribe practices designed to help us achieve this state. Jewish Kabbalistic writings, for example, teach meditative practices that lead to union with the divine. Moreover, many people experience it spontaneously. You may have had such an awakening in one of the following ways:

• a religious conversion

• a mystical experience

• a sense of “Aha!” in which the meaning of the universe or your own life is revealed

• a sudden welling up of joy or peace

• a feeling that the divine is within you or another person

• a sense of awe at the wonder of nature, the universe, or life itself

• a feeling of being absolutely where you ought to be
